1. Method of producing powdered green tea
Matcha is made from “tencha” tea leaves, which are grown using a special method. For several weeks before harvesting, the tea trees are covered with a sun-shading cover, which concentrates the flavor components in the leaves, resulting in a bright green color and a deep flavor. The leaves are then steamed, dried, and carefully ground on a millstone to produce powdered matcha. This is the source of matcha’s characteristic aroma and flavor. Because of the time and effort that goes into this production process, matcha has a special feel to it.
2. Health benefits of matcha
Matcha is more than just delicious. It is packed with a wealth of nutrients and has a positive effect on health. First, it contains the antioxidant catechin and the relaxant L-theanine, which helps reduce stress and improve concentration. It also contains caffeine, but matcha’s caffeine is absorbed slowly, providing a gentle energy boost and supporting long-lasting vitality. In addition, it is rich in vitamin C and dietary fiber, which help to beautify the skin and regulate the intestinal environment. Drinking matcha tea refreshes both body and mind.
3. Matcha’s popularity spreading around the world
Matcha is now popular not only in Japan but also around the world. In particular, matcha lattes and matcha sweets are very popular overseas. Matcha’s health and skin benefits are attracting attention, making it an ingredient that health-conscious people want to include in their daily diet. In the U.S. and Europe, matcha frequently appears on café menus and is popular as a sweet with many variations, such as matcha ice cream and matcha cake. As the appeal of matcha spreads around the world, people overseas are also fascinated by its deep flavour.
4. Matcha culture and Japanese traditions
Matcha plays an important role in the Japanese tea ceremony. In the tea ceremony, the process of preparing matcha is considered an art form, and the ritual is imbued with the spirit of heartfelt hospitality. Drinking matcha is more than just a beverage; it is a time to calm the mind and learn the importance of expressing consideration for others. Through matcha, we can enjoy a quiet yet deep taste. The value of matcha in the traditional tea ceremony still lives on in Japanese culture today.
